Kevin Anderson defeated American Jenson Brooksby, 20 years old, 7-6(8) 6-4 to win Hall of Fame Open.
On Sunday, the 35-year-old South African won his seventh ATP Tour title. This was his first title since January 2019’s Maharashtra Open at Pune.
After accepting the trophy, he stated that he was near the end but was still motivated to go on.
Anderson has come off knee surgery in the last year.
He said, “It’s been quite the road, a number of injuries, surgeries,”
“Winning a title is definitely a big deal.”
Brooksby was the second-youngest finalist in the tournament’s 45-year history.
Greg Rusedski was 19 years old when he won the 1993 title at Newport’s grass courts. This was the only North American tourney on grass.
The tournament takes place in conjunction with the enshrinement ceremonies to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Brooksby’s forehand return into net on the second match point ended the match at 2 hours 11 minutes.
Anderson raised his arms and walked towards a corner of court where he found a seat in the first row behind the baseline. He then hugged Kelsey.
Anderson, an eighth seed and wild-card entrant, was trailing 5-2 in tiebreaker before rallying for a 7-6 lead, his second of the tiebreak.
His slicing ace brought it to 9-8, before he sent down a backhand winner down line to complete the set.
He said, “I was able win some big points with my serve.”

Anderson, a 2018 Wimbledon finalist broke in the first set. Anderson mixed up his serves and switched from hard to slicing, in order to keep Brooksby off balance.
It was the oldest age difference in a final in tournament history.
